📚 VINTAGE FEATURE — VENOM: LETHAL PROTECTOR #1 (1993)

Before Venom had movies, he had this: a six-issue limited series that turned Spider-Man’s scariest villain into Marvel’s first “lethal protector” anti-hero. The red foil cover was pure 1993 — and unlike most foil-era books, this one kept its audience. It’s the first time Venom headlined his own title, with David Michelinie (who co-created the character) writing and Mark Bagley drawing the symbiote at his most monstrous.

Our copy: $28 on eBay now.

✏️ ARTIST SPOTLIGHT — MARK BAGLEY

Bagley drew the Venom feature above, but his fingerprints are all over modern Marvel: a defining Amazing Spider-Man run in the ’90s (including the Carnage era), New Warriors before that, and then the marathon that made history — 111 straight issues of Ultimate Spider-Man with Brian Michael Bendis, one of the longest writer-artist runs on a Marvel title. Fast, clean, expressive — if a ’90s or 2000s Marvel book feels like it moves, odds are good Bagley drew it.
